Our adventure begins by leaving Yuma and heading to Phoenix AZ. Our overnight stay is at the Hampton Inn & Suites. This is a "park/sleep/fly" site where we get a nice room for one night and they let us park our vehicle in a safe lot for the duration of our trip. They take us to the airport and bring us back 24 hours a day. It is a great way to travel and not have to worry about anything.
Up at o'dark-thirty and get the shuttle to the airport at 0400 for a 0600 flight. We get thru security and are waiting at the gate in plenty of time. We are flying stand-by, so it is really an adventure. Unfortunately, none of us put together the facts that this is Memorial Day weekend and it is also time for many graduations. We did not make the 0600 flight or the next one either. Andy's Son calls and tells us that maybe it would be easier to get to Atlanta if we went to Salt Lake City - so we get one the list for Salt Lake City!
Not a problem getting on the flight to Salt Lake City - this is the Grand Canyon, awesome from the air for sure!
Being bored, I turned on the Rand McNally GPS that we got around Christmas time for the Coach. Awesome to see the MPH and Elevation! We are over Utah where the I-15 and I-70 come together. I think the unit got a little confused cause it couldn't calculate any of the other stuff - and it gave me fits for quite awhile after being back on terra-firma!
Welcome to Salt Lake City! Snow on the mountains and we are hopeful for an easy flight to Atlanta.
Unfortunatly, there are just as many stand-by people here in Utah - some of them I recognize from Phoenix! After not making several flights, we decide to just spend the night at the airport. This was our "evening entertainment"! It was amazing that they could clean the carpets and have them ready for passengers in the morning - quite a system. We had power outlets for our computer and places to purchase coffee to help us stay awake (note to self - when flying standby be sure to have something warm just in case! Could have used a blanket, but all was well.)
Welcome to Detroit! After not making the first flight to Atlanta in the morning, Andy's Son said "Detroit is the place to be"! Easy to get on the flight to Detroit and hopefully just as easy to get from there to Atlanta.
Did not get on the first flight out of Detroit, but that is likely because we just didn't have time to get to the gate after landing from Salt Lake City. The flight to Atlanta was awesome - a Boeing 777! Each seat had it's own screen that had TV shows, Movies, Games and lots of other stuff to keep you occupied during the flight. This is a shot of the GPS feature that lets you know exactly where you are at all times. Amazing to be sure.
Our adventure began approximately 0300 in Phoenix Arizona on Wednesday May 23 and ended when we landed safely in Atlanta Georgia at about 8pm on Thursday May 24th. I kept telling Andy that we were getting exactly what we paid for! Andy's Son works for Delta and therefore we can fly standby on his account for free - a very nice bonus to be sure whatever we have to go thru for the benefit.
