Our first stop was Crescent Lake. This is a favorite of the locals - lots of people out in boats or in the water (this is Saturday). If you ask me it is just a little too cool to be thinking of getting wet, but they all seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Our next stop was Odell Lake - a little further to the West. Again, lots of locals, but here the emphasis was on the boating and fishing. This is a much larger lake, and so less crowded. This lake also has multiple campgrounds and lodges along it's long shoreline - it just seemed less crowded to us. I bet there are lots of big fish here!
Then came the crown jewel of the day - Salt Creek Falls. We have seen this sign many times and have heard the stories, so now we will get to see it for ourselves.
Ken and Nita, Andy and I are standing on the walkway overlooking the falls. My handy dandy gorilla tri-pod came to the rescue again and we were able to get a great shot. This little tri-pod wraps it’s legs around anything so it is always easy to find a good spot for the camera to take a “timer shot”!
Salt Creek Falls is the second highest falls in the state of Oregon, a close second to Multnomah Falls up in the Columbia River Gorge. Ken tells us that sometimes the spray is such that a beautiful rainbow appears in the canyon beneath the falls. We saw hints of a rainbow while we were there. This picture doesn’t do the falls any justice at all - it was fantastic!
We traveled back East to Crescent Lake Junction and stopped in to Manleys Tavern Lodge for some lunch. This is kind of a sports bar, but more like a Lodge you would want to be at in the Winter when the snow is deep. Their specialty is Broasted Chicken and Jo Jo’s - so we had to have that. We didn’t have a clue what Jo Jo’s were, so we were smart enough to ask - well it is just a nickname for Potatoes! The ice cold Amber Bock on tap was the best and the Chicken and Potatoes were yummy. I have to say that the Ponderosa in LaPine does a better job at the Broasted thing, but this was still pretty darn good!
A perfect day with good friends……..
